1902 Dosan's First Journey to America
Dosan planned his travel to America in 1902 to study the Western education system in America and Christianity. He married Helen Lee in Seoul before leaving and they traveled to America together. They were the first married couple to leave Korea. Dosan and Helen went from Inchon to Tokyo and then onto Seattle and landed in San Francisco on October 14, 1902. When they arrived in San Francisco they went through Angel Island where US officials processed immigrants coming to America. At the time they arrived there were already a few Koreans there selling Korean ginseng.
Dosan and His wife Helen's passport numbers were 51 and 52 issued by King Kojung. There were only a limited number of passorts issued by Koreans before Japanese took control of Korea in 1905.
